2023 Lederer-Pierce Research Forum

The 2023 Lederer-Pierce competition is scheduled for Wednesday, May 17th in-personWe will be gathering at the American College of Surgeons Building, 28th Floor, 633 N. St. Clair Street in downtown Chicago.   A reception will begin at 5:00 p.m. with presentations starting at 5:45 p.m.    Otolaryngology residents from each of the five Chicago-area training programs are encouraged to submit a research paper.

First prize is $750; second prize is $500; and third prize is $250.

Timeline

Please make note of the following key dates. 

  • List of contestants submitted by each training program by May 3, 2023
  • Abstract due date:  Friday, May 12, 2023 at 5:00 p.m.  Please note - this is a firm deadline!  Late submissions will not be considered.
  • PowerPoint files of presentations due:  Tuesday, May 16, 2023 at 12:00 noon
    Late presentations, updated PowerPoint files or presentations in Keynote format will not be accepted. Make sure any attending faculty working with a resident is aware of this critical deadline.
  • Presentations begin:  Wednesday, May 18 at 5:45 p.m.  (reception starts at 5:00 p.m.)

Submissions

  • Abstracts 
    • Each participating resident may submit only one abstract, but there is no limit on the number of entries from each residency program.  (Please use common sense as to the number of entries from your department.)
    • Abstracts are limited to one page following the standard format: 
      -- Author's name
      -- Title
      -- Introduction/background summary
      -- Methods
      -- Results
      -- Conclusions
    • Topics may be on a clinical subject or a basic science topic.
    • Submit in Word format to the CL&O office by email:  Rich@RichardPaulAssociates.com 
    • The cover email must include the author's name & degree, residency program, email address, mailing address, and preferred phone number.
  • Presentations
    • Time for each presentation is 5 minutes.  Be sure to practice so you adhere to the time limit!
    • Each presentation must include a disclosure slide immediately following the title slide.  Click on these links to download a template in PowerPoint format.
      • Wide - 16:9 aspect ratio
      • Normal - 4:3 aspect ratio

Judging

  • Winners will be announced at the conclusion of the competition that evening, by email and on the CL&O website
  • Scoring will be based on both content and presentation.
  • Judges will complete their evaluations immediately following the presentations.  In fairness to contestants, judges will not score residents from their own program.
